Create recurring checks

Quality Control (BC)  •  Article  •  8/26/2026  •

A recurring quality control check is created at a fixed interval rather than in response to a document event. Recurring checks are typically used for periodic process inspections — for example, a daily hygiene check, an hourly equipment reading, or a check every fixed quantity of production output.

There are three approaches to creating recurring checks, depending on whether the cadence should follow production activity, track how long stock has been in storage, or run independently of any source document.

ApproachWhen to use
Recurring triggers with Shop Floor ProductionChecks should fire at time or output intervals against active production orders — for example, a check every 30 minutes per running production order. Requires the Aptean Shop Floor Production extension.
Recurring triggers for stored inventoryChecks should fire based on how long a lot has been held at a location or bin — for example, a cold-chain temperature check every 7 days.
Create Quality Control Check report on a job queueChecks should fire on a calendar schedule regardless of production activity — for example, a daily hygiene check, or a check every Monday morning. No extension required.

Recurring triggers with Shop Floor Production

This approach combines a quality control trigger configured with a recurring document action and a job queue entry that runs the recurring-check codeunit. Each time the job runs, the codeunit evaluates active production orders against matching recurring triggers and creates checks where due.

Two pieces of configuration are required:

  1. A quality control trigger with a recurring document action — Recurring Time or Recurring Output Quantity. The trigger defines the plan, team, frequency, and the production orders it applies to. These actions require the Aptean Shop Floor Production extension. For more information, see Set up quality control triggers.
  2. A job queue entry that runs the recurring-check codeunit on a schedule.

Create the job queue entry

The Aptean Shop Floor Production Setup page provides a shortcut that creates the job queue entry automatically with the correct codeunit and a reasonable default schedule.

  1. Select the Search icon , enter Shop Floor Production Setup, and choose the related link.
  2. On the action bar, select Create Job Queue Entry for Recurring Quality Control Checks – QCA.

The system creates a recurring job queue entry that runs codeunit 70234090 — CreateQualityCheckJQ14FDW. Open the entry from the Job Queue Entries page to adjust the schedule, days of week, or run frequency. For more information on configuring job queue entries, see Use Job Queues to Schedule Tasks in the Business Central documentation.

How recurring trigger checks are created

When the job runs, it identifies every active production order that matches a recurring trigger and applies the trigger's recurring period or output increment:

  • Recurring Time triggers create a new check each time the configured interval elapses since the last check on that production order (for example, every 30 minutes).
  • Recurring Output Quantity triggers create a new check each time the configured output quantity is reached since the last check (for example, every 100 units).

By default the first check is created only once the interval or output quantity increment has been reached. To have the first check created as soon as the operation is started in Shop Floor Production instead, select the Create First Recurring Check on Start field on the trigger. For more information, see Set up quality control triggers.

More than one recurring trigger can match the same production order routing line. Each matching trigger is scheduled independently against the cumulative production time recorded for that routing line, so a routing line can carry several recurring checks on different cadences — for example, a temperature reading every 30 minutes alongside a weight check every 500 units. Shop Floor Production provides the operator and administrator view of these schedules on the Recurring Quality Check Tracking page, opened from the Prod. Order Routing page, which shows the next expected check for each trigger and allows a check to be forced early. For more information, see Integration with Aptean Shop Floor Production (BC).

The Allow Multiple Open Checks field on the trigger determines whether more than one open check can exist for the same production order at the same time. When this field is cleared, a new recurring check is created only after the previous check on that production order is posted or deleted. This can cause recurring checks to stack when the job runs more frequently than the recurring period — see Integration with Aptean Shop Floor Production (BC) for a worked example.

The Max Recurring Quality Checks – QCA field on the Shop Floor Production Setup page caps the total number of open recurring checks per production order regardless of the Allow Multiple Open Checks setting.

Recurring triggers for stored inventory

You can use quality control triggers with the Inventory document type to automatically create recurring checks for items held in storage — for example, cold-chain temperature checks or shelf-life aging inspections. The system evaluates how long a lot has been at a location or bin and creates a quality control check when the elapsed time meets the trigger's recurring interval.

Inventory-type triggers only evaluate lot-tracked items. The Per Lot field is automatically set to true and is read-only when Document Type is set to Inventory.

Set up an inventory quality control trigger

  1. Select the Search icon , enter Quality Control Triggers, and then choose the related link.
  2. On the action bar, select New.
  3. In the Document Type field, select Inventory.
The Per Lot field is automatically set to true.
  4. In the Document Action field, select Recurring Time.
  5. In the Location Type field, select the appropriate option:
    • Location: Evaluates inventory at a specific location. You can optionally enter a Bin Code to restrict evaluation to a single bin.
    • All Locations: Evaluates inventory across all locations. The Bin Code field must be left blank.
  6. If Location Type is Location, enter the location code in the Location Code field, and optionally enter a Bin Code.
  7. In the Recurring Period and Recurring Value fields, specify the inspection interval (for example, Day and 7 for a weekly check).
  8. Complete the remaining trigger fields as needed (item, lot, source filtering, quality control plan, and team).

Schedule the inventory quality check job

The system evaluates inventory triggers using a dedicated job queue codeunit. Use the following steps to create the job queue entry.

  1. Select the Search icon , enter Quality Control Setup, and then choose the related link.
  2. On the action bar, select Schedule Inventory Quality Checks.
If no job queue entry exists, the system creates one with a default recurrence of 60 minutes and a status of Ready.
If a job queue entry already exists, the page navigates to the Job Queue filtered to show it.

The job evaluates all active inventory-type triggers each time it runs. Elapsed time is calculated from the item's receipt date at the location (Item Ledger Entry posting date) or bin-placement date (Warehouse Entry registering date), whichever applies. The clock resets whenever a quality control check for the same item, lot, location, and bin combination is posted.

Create Quality Control Check report on a job queue

This approach schedules the Create Quality Control Check report itself as a recurring job. Each run of the report creates one check using the team, plan, and filters captured on the request page. Use this approach for inspections that should happen on a calendar schedule rather than in response to production activity — daily hygiene checks, weekly sanitation rounds, monthly equipment audits, and similar.

Schedule the report

  1. Select the Search icon , enter Create Quality Control Check, and choose the related link. Alternatively, on the Quality Control Setup page, select Related > Create Quality Control Check.
  2. On the request page, fill in the fields used to create each check:

    FieldDescription
Quality Control TeamSpecifies the team that owns each created check. Required.
Quality Control PlanSpecifies the plan applied to each created check. Required. Only certified plans are selectable.
Location CodeSpecifies the location stamped on each created check. Optional.
Work Center CodeSpecifies the work center stamped on each created check. Optional.
Customer No.Specifies the customer stamped on each created check. Mutually exclusive with Vendor No.
Vendor No.Specifies the vendor stamped on each created check. Mutually exclusive with Customer No.
  3. Select Schedule to send the report to the job queue. On the Schedule a Report dialog, set the Earliest Start Date/Time and any recurrence options. For more information, see Schedule a Report in the Business Central documentation.

Each scheduled run creates one check with the fields above. The same job queue entry can be edited later from the Job Queue Entries page to change the cadence, suspend the job, or update the request page parameters.
