Setup components types
Before setting up dynamic production, ensure the following prerequisites:
- Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central is installed and configured.
- The Aptean Advanced Attributes extension is installed and configured for potency tracking.
- The Aptean Inspection Status extension is installed and configured (for lot blocking).
- Production BOMs are created and certified in Business Central.
- Items are configured with appropriate unit of measure codes.
- Active ingredient items have potency attributes defined in advanced attributes.
Configure component types
You configure dynamic production by designating component types on production BOM lines. This defines which components are active ingredients, which are dependent on those active ingredients, and which are fillers.
To configure component types on a production BOM, follow these steps:
- Select the Search icon
, enter Production BOM, and then choose the related link.
The Production BOM page opens. - Select the production BOM you want to configure.
-
On the Lines FastTab, in the Component Type field, select the component classification. The available options are:
- Blank (default): Standard component with no dynamic calculation.
- Active Ingredient: Component whose potency drives calculations for dependent components.
- Dependent Ingredient: Component whose quantity is calculated based on active ingredient potency.
- Filler: Component used to make up the difference to reach target batch size.
-
For dependent ingredients, in the Active Ingredient Line No. field, enter the line number of the active ingredient from the same production BOM.
The Active Ingredient Line No. field must reference a line number from the same production BOM that has the Component Type field value set to Active Ingredient. The system validates this relationship and creates the corresponding BOM relationship record automatically.
- On the action bar, select Ingredient Relationships to view and verify the relationships between active and dependent ingredients.
Component type reference
The Component Type field specifies the component classification. The available options are: blank (default), Active Ingredient, Dependent Ingredient, or Filler.
The Active Ingredient Line No. field specifies the production BOM line number of the active ingredient that this dependent component is linked to. Only applicable when the Component Type field value is set to Dependent Ingredient.
Active ingredient
The system designates a component whose potency varies by lot and drives quantity calculations for dependent components.
To configure production BOM:
- Set the Component Type field value to Active Ingredient.
- Ensure the item has potency values defined at the lot level in advanced attributes.
- Define ratio relationships with dependent components.
For example, Vitamin D3 with varying potency levels (80%, 90%, 100%).
Dependent ingredient
Component whose required quantity depends on the active ingredient's potency.
- Set the Component Type field value to Dependent Ingredient.
- Set the Active Ingredient Line No. field value to the line number of the active ingredient.
- System automatically calculates the ratio value in the BOM relationship.
For example, starch carrier whose quantity adjusts based on Vitamin D3 potency.
Component used to reach the target batch size after active and dependent ingredients are calculated.
- Set the Component Type field value to Filler.
- System automatically calculates filler quantity as: Batch Size - (Active Qty + Dependent Qty).
For example, lactose used to fill remaining batch volume.
When you mark a component as Filler, the system automatically adjusts its quantity on production orders to ensure the total batch size remains constant. If multiple fillers exist in a BOM, the quantity adjustment is distributed proportionally among them.
