Manage BOM relationships
The BOM relationships define the mathematical dependencies between active ingredients and dependent components in a production bill of materials. When you assign a lot with specific potency to an active ingredient during production order processing, the system uses these relationships to automatically recalculate the quantities of dependent components based on the lot's potency value.
- An item in the production BOM whose potency varies by lot and drives the quantity calculations for other components. Configure a component as an active ingredient by setting the Component Type field value to Active Ingredient.
- An item in the production BOM whose required quantity depends on the active ingredient's potency. Link a component to its active ingredient by entering the active ingredient's line number in the Active Ingredient Line No. field.
- The mathematical relationship between the active ingredient's potency and the dependent component's required quantity. The system uses this ratio to recalculate quantities when lots with varying potency are assigned.
View BOM relationships
You can view all BOM relationships to understand ingredient dependencies across your production BOMs.
To view BOM relationships, follow these steps:
-
Select the Search icon
, enter BOM Relationships, and then choose the related link.
The BOM Relationship page opens.
You can view the displayed relationships, which include:Field Description Production BOM No. Specifies the production BOM containing this ingredient relationship. Version Code Specifies the version code of the production BOM. Active Ingredient Line No. Specifies the line number of the active ingredient in the production BOM. Dependent Ingredient Line No. Specifies the line number of the dependent ingredient in the production BOM. Active Ingredient Item No. Specifies the item number of the active ingredient. Dependent Ingredient Item No. Specifies the item number of the dependent ingredient. Active Ingredient Description Specifies the description of the active ingredient item. Dependent Ingredient Description Specifies the description of the dependent ingredient item. Ratio Value Specifies the mathematical ratio used to calculate the dependent ingredient quantity based on active ingredient potency. UOM Code Specifies the unit of measure code for the ingredient relationship. -
Use filters to find specific relationships:
- Filter by Production BOM No. field to see all relationships for a specific BOM.
- Filter by Active Ingredient Item No. field to see all components dependent on a specific ingredient.
- Filter by Version Code field to see relationships for a specific BOM version.
The Ratio Value field defines the mathematical relationship between active and dependent ingredients. When you assign a lot with specific potency, the system uses this ratio to recalculate the dependent ingredient quantity based on the lot's potency value.
Create BOM relationships
You can create BOM relationships to define how dependent component quantities should be recalculated when lots with varying potency are assigned to active ingredients.
To create a BOM relationship, follow these steps:
- Select the Search icon
, enter Production BOM, and then choose the related link.
The Production BOM page opens. - Open the production BOM for which you want to define ingredient relationships.
-
On the Lines FastTab, configure the active ingredient:
- Locate the line for the active ingredient.
- Select the Active Ingredient field value to mark this component as an active ingredient.
-
Configure the dependent component and locate the line for the dependent component.
-
In the Dependent On field, select the active ingredient from the drop-down list.
The system automatically creates BOM relationship records when you link a dependent ingredient to an active ingredient using the Active Ingredient Line No. field. The Ratio Value field value is calculated based on the original quantities in the production BOM.
-
On the action bar, select Ingredient Relationships to view the automatically created relationship.
For example, consider a Vitamin D3 tablet formulation where Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) is the active ingredient, and the tablet core blend quantity depends on the Vitamin D3 potency.
Original BOM formulation
- Finished Good: Vitamin D3 1000 IU Tablet
- Batch Size: 1.0 kg (1,000 tablets @ 1.0 g each)
- Target: 1000 IU per tablet × 1000 tablets = 1,000,000 IU total
Original Components:- Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3)
- Original lot potency: 100,000 IU/g
- Required quantity: 10.0 g (provides 1,000,000 IU total)
- Tablet Core Blend
- Original quantity: 990.0 g
- Total: 1,000.0 g (1 kg batch)
BOM configuration
-
Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) line:
- Component Type: Active Ingredient
- BOM Line No.: 10000
-
Tablet Core Blend line:
- Component Type: Dependent Ingredient
- Active Ingredient Line No.: 10000 (linked to Cholecalciferol)
- BOM Line No.: 20000
- BOM Relationship record (automatically created):
- Production BOM No.: VIT-D3-1000
- Active Ingredient Line No.: 10000
- Dependent Ingredient Line No.: 20000
- Ratio Value: 99.0 (because 990g dependent ÷ 10g active = 99)
Lot sssignment scenario
When creating a production order, you assign a specific lot of Cholecalciferol:
- New lot potency: 125,000 IU/g (target is 100,000 IU/g)
- Potency factor: 125,000 ÷ 100,000 = 1.25
- System calculation:
- Cholecalciferol needed: 10.0 g ÷ 1.25 = 8.0 g (provides same 1,000,000 IU)
- Tablet Core Blend: 8.0 g × 99.0 (Ratio Value) = 792.0 g
- Filler adjustment: 1,000.0 g - 8.0 g - 792.0 g = 200.0 g
- Total batch: 8.0 g + 792.0 g + 200.0 g = 1,000.0 g ✓
